Installing Sublime Text. One awesome article in 2021

The way you install Sublime Text depends upon your operating system.

Go to the download page.

Download the version of the editor appropriate for the version of Windows you’re running. If you’re not sure, get the one that is not 64-bit.

Double-click on Sublime Text Setup.exe.

Click Next > Next > Next > Install, with one exception: on the Select Additional Tasks screen (normally the 3rd one), check the box next to Add To Explorer Context Menu.

You can now throw Sublime Text Setup.exe into the Recycle Bin.

Windows Portable Version

The editor makes a portable version available: the software & all other files associated with it run on a USB flash drive. Why do this? Plugin your USB flash drive on any Windows computer, & you can now use the editor; more importantly, it’s your specifically configured version of the editor. This is tremendously helpful for students, who are sometimes at home & sometimes in a computer lab. With a portable version of the editor, you’re always using the same exact setup.

Note: The following instructions are far easier to complete if you first turn on file extensions in Windows.

To install the portable version, go to the Sublime Text download page.

Download the portable version of the popular editor appropriate for the version of Windows you’re running. If you’re not sure, get the one that is not 64-bit.

The download is actually a zip file. If you can right-click on it & choose Unzip or Extract or something like that, do so. That will produce a folder named something like Sublime Text 3.0.1. If you can’t right-click & unzip that way, go ahead & double-click on the zip file. Windows will open up a new window showing the contents of the zip folder. Grab the folder inside the window & drag it to the Desktop of your computer. Close the window.

Drag the unzipped folder named Sublime Text 3.0.1 onto your USB flash drive. To open Sublime Text, open the Sublime Text 3.0.1 folder & double-click on sublime_text.exe.

You can now delete the zip file.

Mac OS X

Go to the download page.

Download Sublime Text for Mac.

In your Downloads directory, double-click on Sublime Text.dmg to open it.

Drag Submlime Text into your Applications folder.

In your Finder, under Devices, click on the little “eject” icon next to the editor.

You can now throw Sublime Text.dmg into the Trash.

Go to download page.

Download the version of Sublime Text appropriate for the version of Linux you’re running (you can check that with uname -a). If you’re not sure, get the one that is not 64-bit.

Double-click on Sublime Text 3.0.1.tar.bz2.

Move the folder the editor into either ~/bin or /opt, or any other location that’s in your PATH.

The popular cross-platform editor finally offers official Linux apt repository to make it easy to install and receive update in Ubuntu.

The editor is a proprietary source code editor with a Python API. It supports many programming languages and markup languages, and its functionality can be extended by users with plugins.

It’s available to download and use for free, but you’re supposed to buy a license if you plan on using it full-time.

Install Sublime Text 3 via the official apt repository:

1. Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for “Terminal” from desktop app launcher. When it opens, run command to install the key:

wget -qO - | sudo apt-key add -

2. Then add the apt repository via command:

echo "deb apt/stable/" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/sublime-text.list

3. Finally check updates and install the editor via your system package manager:

or by running commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install sublime-text

Once installed, launch it from your desktop app launcher and enjoy!

To uninstall the editor, either use your system package manager or simply run command:

sudo apt-get remove sublime-text && sudo apt-get autoremove

And the official the editor apt repository can be removed by going to System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Other Software tab.
